As a photographer, I know how special and important it is to document the arrival of a new baby. Newborn sessions can be both exciting and exhausting, but if you plan ahead, you can make the experience both memorable and stress-free. I've collected a lot of tips and tricks over the years and I wanted to share with you some of my best tips. So, here are a few tips on how to prepare for your newborn session.
1. Choose An Experienced Photographer
When selecting a photographer, make sure they have plenty of experience working with newborns. Ask to see their portfolio and look for images that show their ability to capture the unique beauty of a newborn baby. These are such important and memorable photos , you want to make sure you hire the right person for YOU.
2. Schedule Your Session At The Right Time
Newborns are usually most sleepy and content during the first two weeks of life, so try to schedule your session during this time. The best time to do your newborn session is when the baby is 7-10 days old. Be sure to plan ahead and book when you are pregnant, so the photographer can guarantee availability during this timeframe.
3. Have Everything You Need Ready
Have all the items you’ll need for your session ready to go beforehand. Talk to your photographer beforehand about what kind of props they bring to your session, so you can be prepared on what you need to provide. This could include blankets, props, and outfits. Make sure you have everything you need so you don’t have to worry about it on the day of the session. Also, making sure the area is clean and clutter free to create a relaxing environment is important.
4. Feed Your Baby
A full tummy will help keep your baby content during the session. If nursing, try to feed your baby just before the session to ensure they are as comfortable as possible. Talk to your photographer before and make a plan for when you usually feed them so they know what to expect when planning the session.
5. Have Patience
Newborns are unpredictable, so don’t expect the session to go perfectly. Allow plenty of time for diaper changes, feedings, and cuddles. Your patience will be rewarded with beautiful images! Trust the process and relax. Babies sense their parent's energy, so it’s important to stay calm and trust your photographer!
